Bright hardening and carburizing of alloy steels
51 new Nadcap accredited vacuum oil quench thermal processing, with a 36” x 36” x 48” vacuum oil quench furnace, capable of safely quenching 2,000-pound loads without carbon potential concerns. With a 2000°F operating temperature and a 3,500 gallon capacity oil tank with a fully integrated SBS oil cooling, heating and filtration system. Processing materials under a protective atmosphere with an oil quench, providing precise results and repeatability.
The furnace’s unique capabilities tie vacuum processing for zero decarburization, along with fast quench delay provisions for an immediate oil quench immersion. It is the fastest cooling vacuum furnace in the Solar fleet, and one of only a few of its kind in the U.S.

FAQs
Vacuum oil quenching is a heat treating process that combines the clean environment of a vacuum furnace with the rapid cooling of an oil quench. Components are heated in a high-vacuum atmosphere to prevent oxidation and surface contamination, then rapidly immersed in quench oil to achieve the cooling rates required for hardening specific alloys. This process produces excellent mechanical properties while maintaining bright, clean surfaces and minimizing decarburization.
Vacuum oil quenching is commonly used for alloys that require rapid cooling but are susceptible to cracking if water quenched. Typical materials include:
- Alloy steels (such as 41XX and 43XX series)
- Tool steels
- Medium- to high-carbon steels
- Bearing steels
- Select specialty alloys
The process is most frequently used for through-hardening applications but may also be specified for certain case hardening and solution treatment processes, depending on the material and specification.
Oil provides a slower, more controlled cooling rate than water, reducing the risk of quench cracking while still achieving the hardness and microstructure required for many high-performance alloys. The appropriate quench medium is determined by the alloy chemistry, part geometry, and required mechanical properties.
Vacuum oil quenching offers several important advantages over traditional atmosphere heat treating, including:

Like any rapid cooling process, oil quenching can produce some distortion depending on the alloy, part geometry, and cooling requirements. Custom fixturing and process optimization can significantly reduce distortion, but some dimensional movement should always be anticipated.
When minimizing distortion is the highest priority, high-pressure gas quenching may be considered if the alloy’s hardenability permits. Your heat treater can recommend the most appropriate process based on your application.
Whenever possible, manufacturers should leave sufficient machining stock on components prior to oil quenching. This machining allowance provides the opportunity to correct any minor dimensional changes that may occur during heat treatment, helping ensure the finished part meets final dimensional tolerances.
After quenching, components undergo a thorough cleaning process to remove residual quench oil. The parts are then tempered to relieve internal stresses created during the rapid quench and to achieve the required balance of hardness, strength, toughness, and ductility. Tempering is a critical step that transforms the as-quenched microstructure into a stable, production-ready condition.
